Hey, so my teen keeps saying she’s going straight to the library after school but I’m not totally buying it - I’d like to see the places her phone has actually been over the past few weeks. I know iPhones have something built in that tracks this but I can never find where the setting is. Can anyone walk me through how to pull up the location history, and does it go back far enough to be useful?

What worked for us was going to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations — it does keep a decent history but it can be spotty and only shows “significant” stops, so it might miss a quick detour. Yeah, Significant Locations in Settings is what you want - it’s under Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services. I looked into this a while back for my own situation and it does keep a history, but the data isn’t super detailed and Apple clears it periodically so “past few weeks” might be hit or miss.

but here’s the thing though - that data is pretty limited and only captures locations the phone thinks are “significant” like frequently visited spots. it won’t give you a granular map of every stop. for that you’d need the full location history which apple actually keeps on their servers
but what about whether ios has a way to export that data in a readable format? i’ve seen some people mention the apple data and privacy portal but not sure if location history is included there
