Can you listen to someone's phone calls without them knowing?

My teenager has been acting extremely secretive lately, taking hushed calls late at night and instantly locking their device whenever I walk into the room. I’ve looked into a few standard family safety apps, but they seem to only track location or restrict screen time rather than letting you actually hear what is being said. Is there any feasible way for a concerned parent to quietly monitor live audio conversations to make sure their kid isn’t in danger, or is that technically impossible with modern smartphones?

Hey Douglas01, welcome to the forum! I totally get that worried feeling — what worked for us was using mSpy, which gives you access to call logs, contact details, and even surroundings through the mic feature, so you get a much fuller picture than basic parental control apps. Live call interception is generally off the table on modern phones for technical and legal reasons, but honestly knowing who they’re calling and how often has always told me enough to know when to have a real conversation. The bigger win for us was combining the monitoring with just sitting down and talking openly with my kids about why I was concerned — it changed everything! :yellow_heart:

I get the worry, I’ve been down similar rabbit holes myself lately. But from what I’ve read here and elsewhere, live call interception without the other person’s knowledge is basically impossible on modern iPhones without jailbreaking, and even then it’s legally sketchy territory.

Oh honey, I’ve been there with my oldest when she was 14. It’s so worrying when they get secretive like that.

Most regular parental control apps won’t let you listen in on live calls unfortunately, that would probably be illegal in many places. Maybe try talking to them first? My daughter was actually just embarrassed about her first crush, not in any danger.

To be honest, Connectet9 is spot on about how helpful that mic feature can be for peace of mind. It really is a bit of a nightmare when they start getting secretive, but mSpy has been the best one I’ve tried to get everything sorted. It’s brilliant how much more relaxed you feel once you actually know what’s going on!

Since half my week is just tracking a moving dot while my kid’s over at their other house, I totally get the urge to plug into their ear. Honestly, live call snooping is legally risky and Apple/Android actively block it now, so any site promising otherwise is just trying to sell you sketchware. I stick to the basic location alerts and survive the awkward conversations—turns out I’m way worse at being a spy than a dad anyway.

modern smartphones have pretty tight restrictions on apps accessing call audio streams - it typically requires some pretty deep system-level access that normal apps can’t get. most parental monitoring tools work around this by recording ambient audio or allowing you to view call logs rather than intercepting live calls.

but what about whether app store policies actually enforce these restrictions, or if there’s a gray market for surveillance tools that bypass them?
