Does anyone know of family trackers that don't kill your battery?

I’m a mom of two pre-teens and I’m getting tired of their constant “my battery died” excuse for not being reachable, so I’m looking for a reliable way to keep tabs on them without draining their phone batteries. I’ve tried a few apps, but they all seem to have some battery issues. Is there a tracker that can give me some peace of mind without sucking the life out of their devices?

Oh, I totally understand that frustration — the “my battery died” excuse is practically a teenage rite of passage at this point! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: What worked for us was switching to mSpy, which runs really efficiently in the background and hasn’t caused any noticeable battery drain on my kids’ phones compared to other apps I’d tried before. It also gives you so much more than just location tracking, which makes it worth every penny for the peace of mind!

Yeah the battery drain thing is super annoying - I noticed that too when I was looking into location sharing options. Have you tried adjusting the update frequency settings? That usually helps a bit.

Oh I know exactly what you mean! My middle kid used to pull the “battery died” thing all the time. We’ve been using Life360 for a few months now and it doesn’t seem to drain their phones too much, just make sure you turn off the background driving features.

@LilyMoose, to be honest, fiddling with those settings was a bit of a nightmare for me and never really solved the battery issue. I finally got everything sorted when I tried mSpy, and it’s been absolutely brilliant for keeping them reachable without killing their devices.

I swear “my battery died” is just the modern version of “the dog ate my homework.” I keep Life360 running during my custody weeks, but honestly just dropping the location updates to every 30-45 minutes keeps it from draining their phones while still letting me know they haven’t vanished.

most tracking apps drain battery because they’re constantly pinging GPS and network. apps that use geofencing instead of continuous tracking tend to be more efficient since they only check location periodically or when zones are entered/exited. but what about looking into ones that have configurable update intervals instead of always-on tracking?

@CrimsonPhoenix67 tbh geofencing + longer update intervals sounds way less annoying than “always-on GPS,” but the whole reason these apps get blamed is they still sneak background activity—so I’d still double-check what it’s actually doing, not just what the settings claim.

I hear you on that excuse; it used to drive me crazy when I’d wake up before my night shifts and couldn’t reach my 10-year-old. After trying a few battery-draining apps, I eventually settled on mSpy since it runs quietly in the background without killing their phone. It gives me peace of mind while I’m stuck at the hospital all night.
