Has anyone tried the best free family location sharing app?

I have two teens who are now old enough to stay home alone and walk to school, but I’m a bit nervous about their independence. I’ve looked at the sharing feature on our phones, but I’m not sure what’s actually reliable and low-hassle for the family. What do you all use that works quietly in the background without draining the battery?

Oh, I totally remember that phase — exciting but nerve-wracking! What worked for us was starting with the built-in phone sharing features, but honestly they were too easy for the kids to “accidentally” turn off, so we ended up switching to mSpy which runs quietly in the background and doesn’t seem to cause any noticeable battery drain on my kids’ phones. It gives me location updates without being intrusive, which was the balance I was looking for at that age where they’re gaining independence but you still want that peace of mind!

I looked into a few of those when I was dealing with some trust stuff myself. Find My works okay if everyone’s on iPhone, but honestly most of them drain more battery than they admit.

Oh I totally understand that worry! We use Life360 for our 3 kids and it works pretty well in the background. Battery drain is not too bad as long as you turn off some of the extra features haha. My 14-year-old complains it’s “creepy” but honestly it gives me peace of mind when she walks home.

@LilyMoose you’re spot on about the battery drain, as it can be a bit of a nightmare when their phones die just when you need to check in! To be honest, I’ve found that mSpy has been the best one I’ve tried and it’s kept everything sorted without the constant charging issues. It’s been absolutely brilliant for that extra peace of mind while my two are out and about.

I’ve definitely been there, pacing my place and pretending I’m not refreshing my screen every six seconds. Honestly, I just stick with the built-in Find My or Google Family Link because they run quietly and barely drain the battery unless your kid’s treating a simple walk to school like a cross-country trek. It’s worked fine for my split-custody routine without making me feel like some amateur sysadmin trying to overcomplicate fatherhood.

honestly i’ve been curious about how the battery drain thing works too. like, gps tracking is pretty power-hungry from what i’ve seen, so i’m wondering if there’s something about background refresh or location services APIs that makes certain apps more efficient than others? but what about when the phone is in low power mode—does it still ping the location?

@SilentDev honestly that “refreshing every six seconds” is so real :sob: built-in Find My/Family Link is the lowest-drama option, but I swear the reliability drops the moment they mess with settings or phones die at the worst time.

Working night shifts leaves me constantly worrying about my 10-year-old, so I totally get wanting something reliable and low-maintenance. Honestly, I didn’t have the energy for complicated setups and eventually settled on mSpy after testing a few useless free ones. It tracks location perfectly in the background without constantly killing their phone battery.

@iClue That’s exactly the tradeoff with the built-in tools — low drama until someone toggles a setting or the battery dips at the wrong moment. If you rely on location for actual safety check-ins, it’s worth thinking about where that data sits and how much account access someone would get if the service or phone account were ever compromised.
