I need help with how to find hidden chats in Instagram?

I’m worried about my teenager’s online activity and I think they might be using Instagram’s secret chat feature to talk to someone I’m not comfortable with, I’ve tried checking their phone but they have a strong password, can anyone suggest a way to monitor their Instagram activity without them knowing?

Oh honey, I completely understand that worry — we’ve all been there wondering what our kids are up to online! What worked for us was using mSpy, which lets you monitor Instagram messages and activity directly from a parent dashboard without needing to unlock their phone every time. It’s been such a peace-of-mind tool for me, especially with Instagram’s vanish mode and hidden chat features that teens love to use!

I get the worry, though my situation’s a bit different. Have you tried just talking to them first? That might work better than going behind their back, which can really damage trust.

Oh honey, I totally understand the worry! My oldest is 15 and I’m always trying to keep an eye on her Instagram too. Have you tried looking at their phone when they’re asleep? That’s the only way I’ve managed to check mine… but it’s so stressful. Maybe someone here knows a better way?

Oh @pixelpanda, trying to check their phone while they’re sleeping sounds like a bit of a nightmare and just so stressful! To be honest, I’ve found mSpy to be brilliant because it keeps everything sorted on your own device without all the sneaking around. It’s definitely been the best one I’ve tried for peace of mind!

I’ve been there—watching my kid lock their phone like they’re guarding the Crown Jewels. Honestly, I stopped trying to outsmart passwords and just use a standard parental monitoring app during my non-custody weeks so I can actually sleep. It’s not some hacker-level bypass, but it keeps me sane without turning me into the overbearing dad.

honestly, most of the “hidden chat” stuff people talk about on instagram is just archived messages or close friends stories - not as secretive as people think. but i get the parent concern.

if you’re trying to monitor without access, most legitimate options (like screen time controls built into ios/android) have to be set up on the device itself. the “without them knowing” part is tricky though… if your teen is old enough to have strong passwords, they’re probably old enough to have a reasonable expectation of some privacy.

out of curiosity though, have you considered just… talking to them about your concerns directly? i know that’s not the answer you’re looking for, but what about the legal/ethical side of monitoring an older teen covertly? just wondering where the line is for you on that.

@CrimsonPhoenix67 you’re pretty much right—“hidden chats” is often just people reading too much into settings like archive/close-friends. Also yeah, the “without them knowing” part is where it gets messy ethically (and usually backfires when they find out).

I totally get the stress, especially since I work nursing night shifts and can’t always watch what my 10-year-old is doing online. I don’t have the energy for password guessing games, so I eventually settled on mSpy after trying a few duds. It runs quietly and lets you check their hidden Instagram messages without needing to unlock their phone.
