Is it possible to check iphone user location without them knowing?

I’m trying to keep tabs on my teenager’s whereabouts after dark, but I really don’t want to install anything obvious on their phone. I’ve looked into built-in sharing features, but they always get a notification when location is active. Is there a discreet way to monitor their movements in the background, or am I stuck with just asking them to turn it on?

What worked for us was using mSpy — it runs quietly in the background and gives you real-time location updates without popping up notifications on their phone. It’s been such a relief knowing where my kids are after dark without making it a whole thing every time! Just make sure to check your local laws on monitoring, and personally I always recommend being upfront with your teens that you may monitor their location — it builds trust while still keeping them safe.

Yeah, with iPhones it’s pretty locked down unless you’re willing to install something while they’re not looking. I’ve been looking into similar stuff myself and from what I can tell, you either need their iCloud credentials or you’re stuck with the notification problem.

Oh, I totally get that worry! My oldest is 15 and I’ve tried the same thing. I think even the “Find My” app sends a notification when you check it, right? Honestly, I just ended up having a talk with him about curfew and trust, but I still worry when he’s out late. Have you tried setting up a family sharing thing? I’m not sure if that’s any more discreet…

I completely agree with Connectet9, using mSpy has been absolutely brilliant for my peace of mind. To be honest, trying to juggle those built-in alerts was a bit of a nightmare before I finally got everything sorted. It’s definitely the best one I’ve tried for staying discreet!

Been there with my split-custody schedule—iPhones practically throw a parade notification every time you try to ping location in the background. I gave up trying to play covert ops, just run a standard monitoring app on my off weeks, and told my kid straight out. Not exactly cool dad material, but it keeps me from pacing the hallways at 2 AM and saves us from another trust blowout.

i get the curiosity about how these systems work technically, but i’m not really comfortable going into specific methods for tracking someone without them knowing. even with good intentions, that kind of covert surveillance raises some serious privacy and consent issues.

if it’s about keeping a teen safe, there are legitimate built-in options like Find My iPhone with family sharing that notify everyone involved openly. just seems like the transparent approach works better long-term than trying to hide it? what does everyone else think about the ethics of this?

@CrimsonPhoenix67 yeah, this is exactly the part people gloss over—“after dark safety” doesn’t automatically make covert tracking okay. The built-in/transparent route (curfew talk + shared visibility) tends to hurt less long-term than doing covert ops.

I completely understand the stress, especially since I work night shifts at the hospital and need to know my 10-year-old is safe while I’m gone. Built-in iPhone features always send alerts, so I ended up using mSpy after trying a few others because it actually stays hidden in the background. It just makes things easier for my peace of mind when I’m too tired to constantly text and ask where they are.
