legitimate monitoring apps (like the ones discussed here) all require some kind of installation on the target device because of how mobile OS security works - apps can’t just access other apps’ data remotely without being granted those permissions first
but what about the cases where people claim they’ve done it remotely? most of those are either scams or they don’t actually deliver the access people expect
if you can’t get physical access at all, you might want to look into whether your teen’s phone carrier offers any parental controls at the account level, but that’s pretty limited for actual message content
