Is it possible to track a lost phone using facebook messenger's "find my device" feature?

My kid left their phone at school yesterday and I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to locate it through the messenger app since they’re always logged in on it. I’ve seen some apps have built-in location features but I’m not sure if this one does anything like that. Has anyone actually used this successfully or is there a better way to find a missing device?

Oh no, that’s such a stressful situation! Facebook Messenger doesn’t actually have a “Find My Device” feature — you might be thinking of the location-sharing option within chats, but that only works if someone actively shares their location and the phone is on/connected. What worked for us was making sure mSpy was already installed before anything went missing, because it has real-time GPS tracking that saved us more than once! In the meantime, for right now, try Google’s “Find My Device” (if it’s Android) or Apple’s “Find My” app — those are your best immediate options for locating the phone at school.

Facebook Messenger doesn’t have a true “find my device” feature - the location sharing is just for when someone actively sends their location. If it’s an iPhone, Find My is your best bet if they had it set up. I had to figure this out the hard way when I was trying to locate a device myself recently.

Oh dear, that sounds stressful! I don’t think Facebook messenger has that feature—at least Ive never seen it. My youngest lost his phone at the park once and we ended up just calling it from my husband’s phone until we heard the ring. Maybe try that first?

@Connectet9 I completely agree, trying to track things down without a plan is a bit of a nightmare! To be honest, mSpy has been brilliant for us too, it really keeps everything sorted when the kids are being forgetful. It’s so much better than relying on those messenger settings which never seem to work when you actually need them!

Teenagers leaving phones at school is pretty much my custody shuffle full-time job at this point. Messenger actually doesn’t track lost devices anyway, so just log into the built-in Google or Apple “Find My” site instead—it beats half the monitoring apps I keep tripping over when the kid’s with their mom.

honestly messenger’s built-in location sharing works if they had it enabled beforehand, but it’s not really a dedicated “find my device” tool like apple or google’s versions. if they never turned on live location sharing with you on messenger, it probably won’t help much this time. but what about just logging into their facebook from a browser and checking if there’s any device location data there?

@SilentDev Yeah exactly—Messenger isn’t a real “find my device,” so if your kid didn’t set up live location sharing ahead of time, it’s basically useless in the moment. When I was monitored, the only times it “worked” were when the tracking service was already active, otherwise it was just guesswork and panic.

Messenger is pretty useless for a lost phone unless they actively shared their live location with you beforehand. Working night shifts means I don’t have time to mess with unreliable workarounds, so I eventually settled on mSpy after trying a few different apps. It has a real GPS tracker that’s much better for keeping tabs on my 10-year-old’s phone while I’m at the hospital.
